Sonia Strumpfer

I was born in Cape Town in the early sixties, completed my schooling in Pretoria before I went on to graduate from the University of Potchefstoom with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication. My work has been widely exhibited in Port Elizabeth and in various other locations in South Africa with sales to both corporate and private clients here and overseas. My work can best be described as “intuitive”. I respond to my subject matter with energetic brushwork and lively colour. My work is versatile, bold, very colourful and usually quite large. I am happy when my paintings not only add beauty and colour to their owner’s lives, but when they express an intangible but deep sense of peace and joy. I see my art as part of my calling to love, serve and glorify God and a means to love others. I am married and live in Port Elizabeth.

Sonia at work in her Studio in Port Elizabethsonia2

Born in Cape Town, Sonia matriculated in Pretoria and studied at the University of Potchefstroom for a BA degree in Communication. After graduating she worked for National Press for two years, then studied nursing and specialised in intensive care nursing.

She worked in intensive care units in Tygerberg and Paarl over the next 14 years, painting as a release from the stressful work.

Wanting to further develop her art, she studied watercolour painting in her free time with Johan Coetzee.

After moving to Port Elizabeth in 1998 she trained in oil painting under Rina de Wet, Duncan Stuart and Nonnie Roodt.

Her debut exhibition was in 2001 when she organized a large exhibition for 20 local artists. Her works have been exhibited in Port Elizabeth (Cuyler Gallery, Montage Gallery, Keith John’s Gallery, NMMM Gallery, Kuhne Boekkooi Gallery), and in galleries in Kleinmond, Strand, Swellendam and Nieu Bethesda.

Her first solo exhibition was held in May 2005. Sonia’s work is versatile, bold, very colourful and usually very large.
